Everything We Know About Rick and Morty Season 9

Wubba lubba dub dub. Rick and Morty is back for another dimension-hopping season, and this year is shaping up to break our brains across the multiverse. After eight seasons of intergalactic chaos and more alternate realities than anyone could possibly keep track of, our favourite (dysfunctional) grandfather and grandson duo is back with a fresh batch of episodes on STACKTV.

Besides disastrous inventions, weird alien encounters and more than enough emotional trauma to keep Morty in therapy for years, here’s everything else we know so far about season 9.

When does Rick and Morty season 9 premiere?

Season 9 premieres May 24 on STACKTV, with new episodes streaming every Monday.

The new season arrives a year after season 8, which is great news considering there was a lengthy break between seasons 7 and 8 due to the Hollywood strikes. It’s a good sign that after a few bumps in the road, this series is back on track.

Who’s returning for season 9?

The entire Smith family is back, including:

Ian Cardoni as Rick Sanchez
Harry Belden as Morty Smith
Sarah Chalke as Beth
Chris Parnell as Jerry
Spencer Grammer as Summer

As you can see, Cardoni and Belden continue to voice the title characters after taking over the roles in season 7 from co-creator Justin Roiland, who left in 2023. At first, the transition felt weird, but by now we’re all used to the new voices. That means we can refocus our attention to the stories at hand rather than the behind-the-scenes controversies.

What will season 9 be about?

While there are no definitive answers, we do know the premiere is titled “There’s Something About Morty” in which a fan-favourite character may or may not return. At some point, there will be a storyline about the furniture attacking the family, and, as promised in the trailer, Rick will once again train his grandson in some way, shape or form.

Otherwise, expect plenty of the same trope-breaking gags and adventures that we’ve come to know and love from this show, but perhaps in a more serialized setting.

“My part of it is, I’ll just always insist on the modular, one-off thing,” co-creator Dan Harmon told The Hollywood Reporter of the format change. “That is harder to pull off and therefore requires more energy. And serialization is a glorious, wonderful thing that happens automatically to a show that people love. So it doesn’t really need help. But we do have younger, smarter people on the staff whose very job is to remember which Rick is from which dimension. They make great, strong advocates for fantastic and canonical mythical episodes.”

When we last left the duo in season 8, there were a few threads hanging, like Rick’s identity crisis and Morty’s need to be more independent. That’s given the series more of an emotional undertone as of late, but who are we kidding? We’re still in it for the ridiculous storylines and episodic chaos.

How many seasons of Rick and Morty are left?

According to Rick’s voiceover quip in the trailer, there are “only an indefinite number more” of episodes to look forward to.

More specifically, Rick and Morty has been renewed for 12 seasons. Here’s hoping the current workflow behind-the-scenes means that we get at least one season per year from hereon in.

What’s going on with the Rick and Morty spinoff?

For those keeping track, a Rick and Morty spinoff called President Curtis was ordered at San Diego Comic-Con last summer. The series features Keith David returning as the title character, with Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Jim Rash (Community) joining the cast.

So far, there is no release date for President Curtis, but it’s looking like later this year is a possibility and a second season is already in the works.

In the meantime, Rick and Morty season 9 is ready to keep the multiverse spinning. Stream it on STACKTV starting May 24.
