Evil Morty’s true identity

Fans are obsessed with Evil Morty and for good reason: he represents everything Morty could be if he separated himself from Rick. Evil Morty is a baddie, and every time he’s onscreen it leads to chaos.

For that reason, some fans believe Evil Morty is the true Morty. One of the longest-running theories is that Rick C-137 (the Rick we follow in the series) abandoned or somehow destroyed the original version of Morty. That Morty realized he was being used and became Evil Morty, which would explain why there is so much chemistry between Rick and Evil Morty. If that’s the case, then Morty Prime is basically Evil Morty’s replacement and we’ve been rooting for the wrong hero all along.

The death of all Dianes

By now we know that Rick Prime (the evil one) destroyed all of the Dianes across all realities using the Omega Device. As per the show, Rick Prime did it to establish power against the other Ricks, especially Rick C-137 after he chose his wife and family over a life of interdimensional travel. But which Diane did Rick Prime actually use to eliminate them all?

Some Reddit users believe Prime Rick used his own wife as the payload. It’s a dark theory that involves a version of Diane who either left or rejected Prime Rick, and he obliterated her from existence to erase love itself from the multiverse.

An erased older brother

Speaking of people who have been wiped from the multiverse, some eagle-eyed viewers believe that Morty had an older brother who disappeared at some point. In Season 5, Mr. Nimbus asked Rick if Morty was his new sidekick, Kyle. Later on, Rick also spun a wheel of replacement sidekicks, and one of the wedges was “Kyle 2.0.”

Naturally, those throwaway moments became canon for many fans, with more than a few believing that Kyle was related to the family somehow until something horrible happened. Some think that Kyle got too smart and Rick had to get rid of him, or that Prime Rick somehow erased him, too.

Morty becomes Rick

If you want to get really morbid, consider this: what if Morty eventually becomes so traumatized that he grows into Rick? That’s one theory fans are sticking to, particularly after the show started getting into memory loops and the overall cyclical nature of Rick and Morty’s relationship.

It’s pretty dark if you think about it. Not only does this one mean that Morty will never get a happy ending, but it also means that Rick can never escape himself. If you subscribe to this one, then every adventure the duo goes on is meant to make Morty a little more like Rick until he eventually just becomes him.

Rick isn’t real

It’s no secret Morty has some deep issues, particularly thanks to the way his family treats him. In fact, the kid seems so damaged that some fans believe Rick lives entirely in his head. Either the character never existed in real life or he died a long time ago, and he only appears to help Morty out when he needs to cope. Those adventures? They represent his mental illness and escapism from neglect and potential depression.

Some fans point to the fact that Morty always disassociates as proof of this theory, while others believe he could even be institutionalized. It’s not completely far-fetched, considering the fractured memories, memory wipes and shifting realities that Rick and Morty dishes out every season.

Of course, by the same logic it could also be debated that this is all in Rick’s head, and every time he goes into a bender he believes he’s on an adventure with his grandson rather than passed out in the garage.
